The purpose of the Global Mala Yoga for Peace is to unite the global yoga community from every continent, school or approach to form a “Mala (garland) around the earth” through collective practices based upon the sacred cycle of 108 on the Spring Equinox, as the yoga world’s offering to further the UN International Peace Day.
Each Centre offers their form of a Yoga Mala (garland) according to their yoga tradition and inspiration:
108 Sun Salutations
108 rounds of mantra
108 rounds of kriya
108 minutes of meditation, kirtan or movement meditation.
The Tauranga Yoga Centre is offering students the opportunity to learn an ancient mantra called the Gayatri Mantra.108 rounds of Gayatri mantra will be taught and lead by Helen Paul-Smith.
There is a gold coin donation and all proceeds will go to the Yoga in Prisons Trust (New Zealand registered charitable trust).
The Gayatri Mantra is a highly revered mantra based on a Vedic Sanskrit verse from a hymn of the Rigveda. As with anything Sanskrit there are many meanings. My personal interpretation is as follows: We meditate upon the creator of our universe that we may be guided to live our truth on our journey through life.
Peace.
108 rounds of the Gayatri mantra will take around 30-45 minutes of your time and the proceeds will go to a good cause so come along fellow yogis and get behind the spreading of yoga throughout our community.
